HP Deskjet Printers - 'Looking for New Hardware' Message Displays in Windows XP When Installing the Printer Driver

In Windows XP, the printer installation proceeds as expected until it stops and a message appears, Looking for New Hardware or New printer detected, please wait .
Solution for Hp Deskjet 3744
Solution one: Remove USB printing support and re-seat the cable
To resolve this issue with a USB connection, follow the instructions below. If you are trying to connect with a parallel cable (HP Deskjet 5650 printer only), skip to Solution four .
If the Looking for New Hardware message is still on the screen, do not click Cancel . If the Looking for New Hardware message is not on the screen, continue to the next step.
Unplug the USB cable from the printer, and then plug the cable back in. If the printer is still not detected, continue to the next step.
Go to Device Manager and remove the appropriate entry. Follow the steps below:
Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
In Classic view, double-click the System icon.
In Category view, click Performance and Maintenance .
Click See basic information about this computer . The System Properties window appears.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager .
Click the plus sign ( + ) next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers .
Right-click the entry for USB Printing Support , and then click Uninstall .
A warning message will appear. Click OK .
Close Device Manager , and then close System Properties , and Control Panel .
Unplug the USB cable of the printer.
If the Looking for New Hardware message is still on the screen, plug in the USB cable. Windows should find the printer, and the installation should complete. If Windows is still unable to locate the printer, skip to Edit the registry section.
If the Looking for New Hardware window is not on the screen, leave the USB cable unplugged, and follow the steps below.
Restart the computer.
Verify that the HP Deskjet printer software CD is in the computer's CD-ROM.
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type D:\SETUP (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM), and then click OK .
Follow the onscreen instructions to install the printer. Do not connect the printer cable until prompted to do so.
When the Looking for New Hardware window appears, plug in the USB cable of the printer.
Windows should find the printer and the installation should complete.
If Windows is still unable to locate the printer, proceed to the Edit the registry section.
Solution two: Remove Other and Unknown Devices (HP Deskjet) and reseat the cable
Complete the following steps to remove Other and Unknown devices related to HP Deskjet.
Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
In Classic view, double-click the System icon .
In Category view, click Performance and Maintenance .
Click See basic information about this computer to open the System Properties box.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager .
Click the plus sign ( + ) next to other devices .
Right-click the entry for hp deskjetXXXX , and then click Uninstall .
Click OK in the warning message that appears.
Close the Device Manager , System Properties , and Control Panel .
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer or the computer.
If the Looking for New Hardware message is still on the screen, reconnect the USB cable. Windows should find the printer and the installation should continue until complete.
If Windows is still unable to locate the printer, proceed to the Edit the registry section.
If the Looking for New Hardware message is not on the screen, leave the USB cable disconnected, and follow the steps below:
Restart the computer.
Verify that the HP Deskjet installation CD is in the CD-ROM driver.
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type D:\SETUP (where D is the name of your CD-ROM drive), and then click OK .
Do not connect the cable until prompted. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer.
Windows should find the printer, and the installation should proceed until finished.
If Windows still does not find the printer and install the software, proceed to the next section of this document.
