LaserJet 1012, MacOs9 Windows 2000-2003 Print Server
( problem id 1012-014 )
I used to have my laserjet 4L connected to my windows 2000 server and I had mac/file print sharing installed with appletalk.
On the mac clients I would just go to chooser --> laserwriter8 --> and find the printer.. i would choose the generic .ppd
(printer description?) file and it would work for the mostpart.. anyway... i bought I HP LJ1012 and have it connected to my
server... when I follow the same procedure for the 1012 the mac running os 9.1 has a problem printing to the 1012 attached to
the 2k print server.. the print job goes through.. but it prints out some type of error.. i assume this is because it needs
to use an actual driver on the mac rather than the generic one.. so I downloaded and installed the HP LJ1012 software on the
mac, and I see the laserjet icon in the chooser.. however when I click on it it scans tcp/ip for printers and comes up with
nothing... probably because I am using a 2k machine as a print server rather than a HP jetdirect box... is there a way to use
the correct driver and get this printer to work??? i tried clicking on the laserwriter, choosing the 1012 printer it finds,
then pointing it to some ppd file that the install program put in the quark directory.. it tells me it isn't a valid printer
description file..
ps-- my 2k server is connected to the printer via usb and windows clients can print to the printer just fine through the
tcp/ip network.. and also, the mac and physically print to the printer i guess through appletalk, but it's not using the
correct LJ 1012 driver

The LaserJet 1012 is using "Host-based printing" instead of PCL. Such printers are also called GDI-printers.
PCL (the common LaserJet printer language) is available with the HP LaserJet 1015 only.
So is probably be the source of your problem.
